Summer is the month of fun and frolic for both you and your
four-legged companion. Lot of sun, greenery and time to go out in the open to
enjoy after a long hibernation (may be called so ;)). As the sun blazes out, your
pet wants to be always out enjoying the sun and roaming here and there under
the sun exploring things in free time.
On the contrary, along with the sunshine and joy, this season
also brings a different kind of dangers for your lovable companion. Find here
the dangers that you need to be aware of to protect your pet and prevent him/her
from falling into some unwanted situations.
Heat Stroke
During summer, many dogs are taken to vet offices for heat
stroke. Dogs are not at lower risk to heat stroke. Some breeds like Boston
terriers, which have shorter nose cannot cool down themselves as easily as
other breeds. In canines, overheating is quite common. Once they reach a high
level of temperature that is 109 F (normal temperature is about 100-102.5 F).
They may suffer from multiple organ dysfunctions, which can be even deadly.
If you find your pet is having a heat stroke, immediately
take him under shade or cool place. Provide him cool water without forcing him
to drink it. Fan him directly or you may put him directly under tap or put wet
cold towels over his body for cooling him. But, do remember that never provide
ice or ice water to cool him down, as this will adversely harm your furry
friend.
Insects – Fleas
and Ticks
The shimmering sun in the sky brings live those nasty
creatures from nowhere. Fleas and ticks are the worst enemies of your dog in
summer. Heavy flea and tick infestation plays havoc on your pet sucking their
blood and irritating them apart from causing severe conditions like flea
dermatitis.
Controlling these blood-sucking pests is the best remedy to
protect your furry friend. Flea and tick preventives like Frontline Plus or
Advantix are the best options.
Sunburn
Enjoying the sun for a while is good for your furry friend
when summer sets in. However, staying out whole day can cause sunburn to your
pet. Areas near lips and ears, and nose of dogs are more prone to sunburn and
in severe cases, you may even have to take your pooch to a vet.
Some kind of veterinary sunscreens are available at pet
supplies store. Using sunscreen regularly when your four-legged companion is
out in the sun is the best way to prevent sunburn.
Other Animals
In summer, dogs may get attacked from different insects and
animals. Bee stings are dangerous as they cause big swollen bump. Snakes are
also common in summers especially if you are living near natural habitat. They
are also biggest threat to your pet as they are poisonous. Some spiders bite
also proves to be dangerous to furry pals.
- Don’t let your pet roam
here and there especially in bushy areas or near the wild area. If you have
found that a snake has bitten your pet, immediately call a poison centre
helpline or take him to a vet.
- For bee sting, apply a
cool compress on the affected area. Also, apply a mixture of water and
baking soda to neutralize the effect of venom.
Grass and Weeds
Summer is time of blooming of different flowers, and plants
grow apart from grass everywhere. Grass is not good for your furry friend
because if he chews it may get stuck and choke your pet. Moreover, weeds found
in your backyard or garden, are also dangerous for your pet. These are all toxic
and harmful to your pet friend.
Its’ better to remove those weeds from your garden and take
care that your furry pal do not chew on grass.
Summer is the season to get a sunbath along with enjoying
the greenery everywhere after a long period of white landscape, but it does
also mean that you need to be extra careful. You should be watchful and
proactive so that your lovable friend does not suffer from any unwanted
conditions of hot weather.
Well, see that while enjoying the warm season your four-legged
companion is safe and sound.
