Pets are domesticated animals that live with their human companions. This is such an easy to put definition but have you ever gone deeper inside this and find out whether your lovely dog or cat is happy with this condition or not. Well, he or she has become habituated of living with you and so has no complains but there are some deep insights, which may open new avenues of thought on having and keeping a happy pet at home.
Cats and dogs are the most popular pets. Talking about them one would always shell out praises about the animal but let us understand that dogs and cats are emotionally dependent on you. Dogs in fact are pack animals who like to live in groups and when they live an isolated life in the company of human family, they need that extra care and love which is their natural instinct. If you are a busy pet parent then you are depriving your pet from the love and affection he needs.
Cats have been hunters in the past and so need some free space. In the confinement of homes, they may not enjoy the freedom they get outdoors. So, when we think about these aspects we realize that pet parenting is a very big responsibility. It not just caring for your pet’s meals and physical well being but also about the pet’s mental health. The idea of pet parenting may sound exciting but, it is a full time job that demands a giving attitude.
How to meet with the emotional needs of pets?
By spending quality time: You need to spend time with your pet. Busy pet parents cannot do so and most of the time their pets live alone at home or are locked in craters for hours. This condition is rather frustrating and agitates the pet.
At times, the pets suffer from separation anxiety and depression. So, be your pet’s true companion, give him company when he needs emotional support by spending time with him. Do not limit yourself to taking him for walks, just play games with him or read to him and be involved with his activities.
Listen to your pet’s mute communication: There are times when your pet would communicate through his body language. If he is not his regular self and remains quiet than his usual self then you should take it as an alarming sign. He might be going through depression so, observe his tacit behavior.
Discuss with your vet or animal expert about these behavioral changes. Moreover, dogs are extremely possessive and attention craving creatures. If you do not give them due attention then they feel left out, ignored and low. So, do not miss any chance to make your pet feel special.
Spend time as a family: Whenever you go on outings then take your pet along with you. Do not leave him with a pet seater. Involving your pet in all family activities makes him feel good and he remains happy. Do not let him feel stressed as your love can make him happier like nothing else.
Be there during stressful times: Your pet could be highly sensitive. He may get scared during thundering, change of environment, change of home, addition of another pet or person etc. In all these conditions, you just be with him to ensure he does not feel dejected.
Appreciate him: Whenever your pet does something good, you should appreciate him to make him feel good. Just as kids expect applause from you on their smallest achievements, pets also need that. Remember, you are the most important part of their life and so your acknowledgment makes him super duper happy.
To sum up, pets are sensitive creatures that need attention, appreciation and affection. Apart from taking care of his food, hygiene and physical health, give him regular doses of your love and affection. Unlike humans, dogs are contented just with your time, care, love and affection so shower all that to keep him fit, fine, smiling and healthy. What say?
