Things to Consider before Zeroing in on Bringing a Stray Cat Home

A kitty shows up in the neighborhood and as a cat lover, your relationship with him/her begins when you feed him/her cat food. Slowly but gradually he/she tugs your heartstrings with his/her big eyes, high-pitched meows and comforting purrs. Now you are thinking about adopting him/her as your beloved pet cat. But wait......Before taking the final plunge it is very important to take precautions so that the feline that you are adopting gets the best life possible.

Things To Zero In On Before Bringing a Stray Cat Home

Ensure that the feline you are adopting is a stray

There are a large number of cats that roam around on the streets in our country. While a majority of them have been found to be stray cats i.e.; pet cats that got lost, some of them are feral cats i.e.; cats that have never been domesticated. So before taking the decision, it is recommended to check ID tags, collars, evidence of microchips, etc. so that you get enough proof that the cat is actually a stray. Remember, a feral cat fears from human beings and can even become very aggressive and so if you find that cat is feral it is best to leave him/her alone in the neighborhood.

Get the cat thoroughly examined by the veterinarian

Before adopting the stray cat get him/her examined because due to outdoor activities there is danger of fleas and ticks, worms and even harmful diseases like Toxoplasmosis that can have major effect on the lives of pregnant women and their unborn child. If the cat has not been fixed yet, get him/her spayed or neutered immediately. Consult with your veterinarian about the things that you need to keep in mind while having a pet cat in the house. He/she will suggest you some lifestyle changes to meet the requirements of your new four-legged pal.

Remember to go slow with the feline

A stray cat is used to prowling and so you may find that the feline would try to steal food or eliminate wherever and whenever possible. Hence, ask your veterinarian to suggest good quality cat food, cat litter and other cat supplies that would make the feline feel better. Even if there is an occasional accident overlook it. Encourage the kitty to eat as much as possible, especially if he/she is malnourished. Never give milk to the cat because it is not good for his/her health. Give lean meals in the diet that will assist in making the cat's muscles strong.

Slowly rebuild confidence in the cat

Food is a sure shot way of winning the heart of the feline. But never pet the cat immediately. Remember, stray cats do not easily trust human beings and so be extra careful as it can result in painful bites or scratches. Make eye contact with the cat and blink slowly. This is a friendly wink in the cat world and so he/she will consider you as a friendly person. Let the cat feels comfortable and get closer to you by bumping him/herself on you or rubbing you with his/her head. These gestures show that the feline completely trusts you and considers you as his/her property.

Cats are one of the most beloved four-legged companions for human beings. But not every stray cat is right for every human being. So before taking the big decision ensure that you are fully prepared to take their complete responsibility. Once you are positive, it will result in a long and fulfilling journey of cat companionship.
