Overview of Canine Allergens, Management And Treatments

Pets can be your best companions and they can be the worst enemy if you have allergies or asthma. Dogs produce multiple allergens or proteins that can cause allergy. These allergens are found in the pooch's hair, dander, saliva and urine. Pets shed dander which is a combination of dead skin cells and hair. The dander can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the allergens. Here is the way to cut down the pet allergens at home as follows:

Reduce The Contact :

You can lower the allergens such as dander in your home by keeping your pet outdoors as much as possible . You should not allow the pet to get in the bedrooms where people with allergies and asthma sleep. Whenever you get in contact with your pet, you should wash your hands thoroughly.

Keep The Furry Friend Off The Couch:

Carpets, upholstered furniture, and beds can trap more dander and make it difficult for you to clean, so keep your pooch out off all these things. If the dog comes in contact with any fabric or materials, it should be vacuumed or washed frequently. This includes cushions, pillows, blankets, pet beds and throw rugs.

Cleaning Regularly:

Dusting will help keep the dander and even the dust mites and other allergens to a minimum. Use vacuum equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter or double bags. It would be a good idea to use the wooden floors instead of the carpet, as it makes easier to remove the dander and eases the process of eliminating the dust.

Bathe Your Pooch:

Research shows that giving a bath frequently to your pet reduces the allergens found in their dander. At least, bathe your dog twice a week as this will keep control allergen buildup.

Symptoms And Treatment For Dog Allergy:

The treatment for dog allergy differs according to the symptoms. Your allergist can help determine what treatment should be given to you, to treat your dog allergy. There are many types of symptoms and their treatments, they are:

  • Respiratory or Asthma symptoms : They can be treated with inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators to prevent or relieve respiratory symptoms.
  • Nasal symptoms: This can be treated with oral antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays or other oral medications.

Minimizing the factors of allergic reactions, you may help your pet and family to lead a healthy and allergen free life.
